Michelle & Gurpreet’s Indian Wedding | Edmonton, Canada

Oh man, we don’t even know where to start with Michelle and Gur’s extraordinary Indian wedding celebration. Their Punjabi wedding took place over 4 remarkable days in Edmonton, Canada. Lanny and I are “Indian wedding rookies,” so we didn’t exactly know what we were in for; the crazy dancing (4 nights in a row), the flavourful, never-ending buffet tables, the uniquely beautiful cultural traditions and ceremonies, the kaleidoscope of colourful outfits, the singing aunties (I believe Gurpreet had 9), and the contagious, tireless energy!

Photographing this wedding conjured up a swirling concoction of nerves, excitement and joy for Lanny and me.

Our nerves, as always, came from self-imposed pressure, expectations, and fear… all of which evaporated away pretty quickly. Once we realized that Michelle and Gur (and their friends and family) are some of the most welcoming and down-to-Earth people in the world, our nervousness gave way to curiosity and fascination. Plus, whenever we didn’t know what was happening, there was always a smiling Auntie close by, eager to explain. Everyone just opened up their hearts and allowed us right in. What we found was a beautifully unapologetic celebration of life, love and friendship.

Our excitement came from the palpable energy radiating off Michelle and Gur. We’re drawn into that energy like gravity to the sun… our cameras, simply vessels for encapsulating it (which may be the reason we made over 28,000 frames throughout this wedding).

Our joy came from all the treasured little moments and stories, to which it was an absolute honour to bare witness and document. You literally couldn’t wipe the smiles off our faces (or the tears from Lanny’s eyes).

Michelle and Gur, thank you! Thank you for surrounding our cameras with so much life, and colour, and trust. Immortalizing your memories was a privilege we don’t take lightly. We’re so happy to have you in our lives!
